Private Sahara desert tours from Marrakech, Fez, Tangier and Casablanca — luxury camps, camel treks, 4x4 excursions and unforgettable nights under the stars.
Merzouga sits on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a vast sand sea whose dunes climb to over 150 metres — the tallest in Morocco. The village is the gateway to an authentic Sahara experience that few places on Earth can match: sweeping golden landscapes, deep silence broken only by wind over sand, and a night sky so vivid it redefines what you thought you knew about stars.
Unlike mass-market desert excursions, every Merzouga tour with Travy is fully private and built around your interests. Whether you want a quick overnight camel trek or a multi-day circuit that threads together mountain passes, ancient kasbahs and hidden oases before reaching the dunes, we design the itinerary from scratch — and handle every transfer, meal and activity along the way.
Our deep local partnerships mean access to the best luxury desert camps, experienced Berber guides, and exclusive routes that bypass the crowds. From the moment you leave your hotel to the moment you return, Travy takes care of everything.
Every route is scenic, private and fully customizable. Pick your departure city and we build the rest.
Marrakech → Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades → Merzouga → Marrakech
The most popular route to the Sahara. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, drive through the Dades and Todra gorges, then arrive at your private luxury camp in the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset camel trek, Berber dinner and starlit night. Return by an alternate scenic route the following day.
Fez → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Ziz Valley → Merzouga → Fez
A compact yet stunning desert escape from Morocco's spiritual capital. Drive south through the cedar forests of Azrou where Barbary macaques roam free, descend into the dramatic Ziz Gorge lined with a million palm trees, and emerge at the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Spend the night in a desert camp with camel ride, traditional dinner and morning sunrise before returning to Fez.
Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fez → Middle Atlas → Merzouga → Marrakech
A grand north-to-south traverse of Morocco that combines the blue alleys of Chefchaouen, the labyrinthine medina of Fez, the Middle Atlas highlands and the Sahara dunes into one seamless journey. Arrive in Merzouga on day three for your private camp experience, then continue south through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to finish in Marrakech.
Casablanca → Beni Mellal → Todra Gorge → Merzouga → Ouarzazate
Start from Morocco's Atlantic coast and drive inland through fertile plains and the dramatic Todra Gorge before reaching the Sahara. Overnight in a luxury camp with 4x4 dune excursion and camel trek, then continue west via Ouarzazate and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs — an unforgettable loop that covers the best of southern Morocco.
From adrenaline rides to meditative silence, Merzouga offers experiences you won't find anywhere else in Morocco.
Follow ancient caravan trails across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes on a guided camel ride. As the sun drops below the horizon, the sand transforms through every shade of amber, copper and violet. Arrive at a private bivouac for a traditional dinner cooked over desert embers, sleep under a blanket of stars, and wake to a silent sunrise from the crest of a dune.
Buckle into a rugged 4x4 and explore the hidden corners of the Erg Chebbi landscape that can only be reached off-road. Visit nomadic Berber families in their tents, discover ancient fossil sites embedded in the rock, and stop at the seasonal Dayet Srji lake — a surreal flash of blue surrounded by an ocean of gold. Full-day and half-day options available.
For thrill-seekers, Merzouga delivers. Race across open desert flats and weave between towering dune ridges on a guided quad bike adventure, or strap onto a waxed sandboard and carve your way down slopes that can reach 150 metres. All equipment and safety gear are provided — no experience needed.
Merzouga is one of the last living centres of Gnawa culture — a tradition of trance music and spiritual healing that dates back centuries. Gather around a campfire after dinner to hear local musicians perform hypnotic rhythms on the guembri and iron castanets, joined by Berber drumming and stories passed down through generations.
With virtually zero light pollution, the Erg Chebbi sky is one of the clearest natural planetariums on the planet. Lie back on a dune and trace the Milky Way from horizon to horizon, spot shooting stars, and identify constellations with the help of your guide. Some of our partner camps offer telescopes and guided astronomy sessions for an even deeper experience.
Travy partners exclusively with hand-inspected camps that meet our standards for comfort, hygiene, location and hospitality.
Spacious canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms, plush bedding, handwoven Berber rugs and private terraces overlooking the dunes. Most include heating for cold desert nights and hot water showers.
Modern transparent domes that let you stargaze from bed. Climate-controlled interiors, designer furniture and panoramic Sahara views for a glamping experience unlike any other.
For a raw, authentic experience: simple Berber tents set deep in the dunes, shared communal fire, traditional meals and the unfiltered sounds of the Sahara night.

Our team has been operating in the Sahara since 2010. We know the best routes, the best seasons, the hidden gems — and the right people to make it all happen.
Merzouga is approximately 560 km from Marrakech, which translates to about 9–10 hours of driving. However, no one drives it in a single stretch — the standard route includes scenic stops at Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, spread over 2–3 days. Travy handles the entire drive with comfortable private vehicles and an experienced driver-guide.
Absolutely. Fez is actually closer to Merzouga (about 480 km) and the route through the Middle Atlas, Azrou cedar forests and the Ziz Valley is equally spectacular. A 2-day tour from Fez with one night in the desert is a popular option, or you can extend to 3–4 days for a more relaxed pace.
All of our Merzouga tours include: private 4x4 or minivan with driver-guide, hotel pickups and drop-offs, all accommodations (desert camp + en-route hotels), breakfasts and dinners, a camel trek in the dunes, and 24/7 support from our local team. Activities like quad biking, sandboarding and 4x4 dune excursions can be added at booking.
The ideal window is October through April when daytime temperatures hover between 18–28 °C and the nights are cool and clear — perfect for camping and stargazing. Summer months (June–August) can exceed 45 °C during the day, though evenings remain pleasant. Travy can advise you on the optimal dates based on your schedule.
Yes. Camel treks, sandboarding and 4x4 excursions are all family-friendly and suitable for children aged 5 and up. Luxury camps offer family tents with extra space, and meals can be adapted. Our guides are experienced with young travelers and can adjust the pace and activities accordingly.
Pack light, breathable layers for the day and warm clothing for the evening (nights can drop below 10 °C in winter). Essentials include sturdy walking shoes or sandals, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a refillable water bottle. Most camps provide towels and basic toiletries. And don't forget your camera — the Sahara light is extraordinary.
